God Says

“Christian spirituality does not begin with us talking about our experience; it begins with listening to God call us, heal us, forgive us.”

Today is Wednesday, April 12, 2017. Holy Wednesday, also called Spy Wednesday, because it is thought to be the day that Judas betrayed Jesus to the Sanhedrin. Four more days until Easter, also known as Resurrection Sunday.

Quote of the Day

“The most important thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother.” ~ Theodore Hesburgh

Word of the Day

Rebarbative ~ causing annoyance, irritation, or aversion; repellent.

Today is Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day. There are so many ways that a delicious grilled cheese sandwich can be enjoyed! We have a local restaurant that specializes in grilled cheese sandwiches. Lee’s Grilled Cheese got started as a food truck and now is a restaurant serving a variety of different sandwiches, all centering around the magic ingredient of cheese. Yum!

The Red Sox handed the Orioles a sound thrashing, last night, beating them 8-1. Perhaps this is an indication that they are getting over their team epidemic of the flu! Pomeranz was great in his season debut, striking out six, giving up only four hits and one run. The Sox remain in third place, but only by a half game. Tonight, they face the O’s again, with knuckler Wright on the mound.

The Rangers continue to struggle with bullpen issues, as they blew a 5-0 lead to lose to the Angels 6-5 in the tenth inning. Struggling “closer” Sam Dyson gave up three runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game. Unfortunately, he doesn’t get credit for the loss, because Jeffress gave up the final run in the bottom of the tenth. The Rangers are 2-5 on the season, fourth place. They play the Angels again tonight, with Griffin on the mound.

(From Living the Message)

In a reading called “Listening to God,” Eugene Peterson reminds us of some truths concerning “Christian spirituality.” The first is that we need not be concerned with the “supernatural.” When we are standing at what he calls “Square One,” what is important is “getting ourselves oriented, coming to terms with our human finitude, getting a glimpse of God’s infinitude.”

We also need to make sure that, as we return to “Square One,” we are not only returning to God, but to “God Said. For not only is there God, there is God’s Word.”

“Christian spirituality does not begin with us talking about our experience; it begins with listening to God call us, heal us, forgive us.”

I seriously believe that statement deserves repeating.

“Christian spirituality does not begin with us talking about our experience; it begins with listening to God call us, heal us, forgive us.”

It wouldn’t hurt to just camp on that statement for a while. It’s really hard for us to get this into our heads. We love to talk. “We talk habitually to ourselves and about ourselves. We don’t listen. If we do listen to each other it is almost always with the purpose of getting something we can use in our turn.” All too often, when the other person is talking, we aren’t listening, but preparing what we are going to say next. “Much of our listening is a form of politeness, courteously waiting our turn to talk about ourselves.” We must break that habit, especially with God, and allow him to speak to us. “God not only is; God says.”

“I can see it now—at the Final Judgment thousands strutting up to me and saying, ‘Master, we preached the Message, we bashed the demons, our God-sponsored projects had everyone talking.’ And do you know what I am going to say? ‘You missed the boat. All you did was use me to make yourselves important.”
Matthew 7:22-23A (The Message)

Father, help me to listen more and talk less.
Even so, come, Lord Jesus!

The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.

Grace and peace, friends.
