It is Saturday, the 18th of March, 2023, in the third week of Lent.
May the peace of the Lord be with you always.
Day 23,746
Yesterday was a fine day in the library computer center. It was steady, but not terribly busy. Mostly, I just had to help people with mobile printing (printing from phones or other devices), a few with scanning, and only one or two with computer-related questions.
I tried something new for lunch, yesterday. I had been driving by the Hawaiian Bros Island Grill on my way to work, and decided to go there for lunch, yesterday. It’s on the corner of the major freeway and the road that the library is on, probably a mile from the library. I had looked at the menu ahead of time and already decided what I wanted to try, which was their “Luau Pig,” which is described as “Slow roasted Kalua Pork seasoned with Hawaiian sea salt.” This comes with rice (and more rice) and their macaroni salad. The mistake I made was ordering the large size. I swear that container weight five pounds as I carried it back to my table!
The Luau Pig was amazing. It resembled pulled pork, and was served on a bed of rice. The seasoning was perfect, and it was cooked perfectly. It was very tender and delicious. There was another snow-ball sized serving of rice in one of the other two partitions in the container, and the other was filled (overflowing) with the macaroni salad. They don’t skimp on the servings, I’ll tell you that. I was wondering, though, why I needed so much rice! I didn’t even eat half of the rice, and only ate about half of the macaroni, and I was stuffed. So next time, I will get small.
Here’s what I didn’t like. The chairs are terribly uncomfortable, almost to the point of being painful. I’m not a small person. Okay, I have a big butt. The other thing I didn’t like was that they serve Pepsi instead of Coke. Sorry (not sorry), I’m just not a Pepsi person. I went ahead and drank a Diet Pepsi, but I would much rather have had a Diet Coke (or Diet Dr. Pepper, but there aren’t many places that serve that).
Because of the chairs and Pepsi, I give the dine-in experience four out of five forks. If it had been take-out, and I had supplied my own beverage, it would have been a solid five, though. I will definitely eat there again, just won’t dine in. And I might also try some different combinations. There are some good looking sides, and also the option of having a mix of two different entrees (for an extra dollar).
Last night, we had our homemade pizza on cauliflower crust for dinner, and watched two more episodes of Daisy Jones and the Six. There are only two more, which will be released next Friday.
Today is my Saturday in the circulation department, but I don’t have to be there until 9:30. There is talk of ordering pizza for lunch, today, so I will take some extra cash with me. I have no clue what tonight’s dinner will be. As for tomorrow, I don’t have any extra activities at church, so I won’t need to be there until the 11:00 service. Oh, and we have a freeze alert for tomorrow morning. The low temp is supposed to be 30 degrees (-1 C).
TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL AND PRAYERS
Look on my misery and rescue me, for I do not forget your law. (Psalms 119:153 NRSV)
I don’t have any “misery,” this morning, but perhaps someone who reads this might.
Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved. (Psalms 55:22 NRSV)
Dear Father in heaven, we thank you. We want to be ready to thank you at all times. We look forward with joy to your kingdom and await the redemption that will free us to the very depth of our being, to the praise and thanks and honor of your name. Be with the many people who come hungering and thirsting to you. Bring deliverance to those whose hearts are true, and let them know that the power of your kingdom is truly present here on earth in Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
(Colossians 1:11-14 NRSV)
Today I am grateful:
- for the readiness to give thanks to God at all times
- for the hunger and thirst for righteousness
- for music of all kinds, and the joy it brings to my soul
- for the promise of God, that if we give, it will be given back to us, “pressed down, shaken together, running over” (Luke 6)
- that I am free in Christ, to the very depths of my being
In your righteousness deliver me and rescue me; incline your ear to me and save me. (Psalms 71:2 NRSV)
Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his faithful ones. O LORD, I am your servant; I am your servant, the child of your serving girl. You have loosed my bonds. I will offer to you a thanksgiving sacrifice and call on the name of the LORD. I will pay my vows to the LORD in the presence of all his people, in the courts of the house of the LORD, in your midst, O Jerusalem. Praise the LORD! (Psalms 116:15-19 NRSV)
“Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven; give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap; for the measure you give will be the measure you get back.”
(Luke 6:37-38 NRSV)
Do not let loyalty and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. (Proverbs 3:3 NRSV)
For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings. (Hosea 6:6 NRSV)
Don’t quit in hard times; pray all the harder.
(Romans 12:12 MSG)
Father, I thank You for the freedom in Christ, freedom that reaches to the very depths of our being. In You, we are free from the need to judge others (although I frequently slip back into that bad habit). In You, we have the freedom to be generous, because we know that You will take care of our needs.
Thank You, Lord, for giving me a generous heart. Not that I am boasting about being generous. Far from it, because I could give so much more. But You have shown us how to give and be generous to others, sharing the blessings which You have shared with us. Help us to keep our eyes open for opportunities to share and bless others, Father.
Let loyalty and faithfulness to You be strong marks of our lives, Lord, as we walk through this world. Not loyalty and faithfulness to what other people think or believe, but only to You. I pray that all of Your children, the Bride of Christ, the Church, would seek the same thing. Let us cast aside all kinds of worldly cares and causes, even those which might be “noble,” in order to show our faithfulness to You and You alone. Let our love for You be the defining mark of our lives, Lord, and let that love for You show itself by our love for others.
You desire steadfast love (mercy), rather than sacrifice; You desire knowledge of You rather than burnt offerings. So open our hearts and teach us, Lord, that we might know You more, that we might know You completely.
Help us to stand strong during hard times, praying in all circumstances, and being thankful at all times and in all circumstances.
Even so, come quickly, Lord Jesus!
Grace and peace, friends.
