Today is Thursday, September 13, 2018. Day 22,099.
“Some people will never learn anything because they understand everything too soon.” ~ Alexander Pope, 1688-1744, The Quotations Page
The word for today is taradiddle, “a trivial or childish lie,” or, “pretentious nonsense.”
DAILY NEWS
I’m trying a new editor in WordPress today, so things may look a little different, as I get used to it.
We made it to the gym, last night. That was actually the second time this week! I stopped and got Subway on the way home, as usual, so we also have a six-inch sandwich for lunch today.
The Red Sox won their 100th game of the season last night, beating the Blue Jays in a close one, 1-0. Definitely a pitcher’s duel, as there were only four hits for each side. And, apparently, the only run scored on a wild pitch by Toronto’s pitcher! The Sox are now 100-46, and ten games up in the AL East! The magic number is now seven. They play Toronto again tonight.
The Rangers lost to the Angels, 8-1. Their record is now 62-84. They are off tonight, and begin a series in San Diego tomorrow night. In my opinion, we should not be having interleague play this late in the season. But they didn’t ask me.
TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL AND PRAYERS
(All Scriptures are from the ESV unless otherwise noted)
The LORD says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.”
The LORD sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of your enemies!
Your people will offer themselves freely on the day of your power, in holy garments; from the womb of the morning, the dew of your youth will be yours.
The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind, “You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.”
The Lord is at your right hand; he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath.
He will execute judgment among the nations, filling them with corpses; he will shatter chiefs over the wide earth.
He will drink from the brook by the way; therefore he will lift up his head. (Psalm 110)
Chapter 3 of Where Your Treasure Is is called “Unself-Centered.” Psalm 110 will be the focus of this chapter. It begins with the following quote from Donald Baillie: “In the Biblical world of thought man is not expected to be centered upon his own personality, but on God. . . . Their interest was in a divine drama, not in a human personality; in supernatural happenings, not in the charm of a gracious Galilean.” (From God Was in Christ)
I’m short on time, so I will have to continue tomorrow. But I will say that we are in desperate need of getting away from the idea of being “self-centered.” This nation has become increasingly more selfish as the years go by. The true solution to this is through God in Christ, giving our lives for something that truly matters.
Father, I pray for help in being “unself-centered.” That has truly been a problem for me, and I pray for the life of Christ to become my center. I also pray for our nation that we might, as a whole, become “unself-centered.” May we as your children lead out in that. Even so, come, Lord Jesus!
The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.
Grace and peace, friends.
