The Cry of the Poor

Today is Friday (finally!), June 8, 2018. Day 22,002.

Nine days until Father’s Day!

“There’s no trick to being a humorist when you have the whole government working for you.” ~ Will Rogers, 1879-1935, The Quotations Page

The word for today is whelm, a verb which means, “to turn (something, such as a dish or vessel) upside down usually to cover something : cover or engulf completely with usually disastrous effect.”

The Red Sox and Rangers both lost, last night. The Sox to the Tigers, 7-2, and the Rangers to the Astros, 5-2.

Time is getting away from me, this morning, so I need to move on.

TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL AND PRAYERS
All Scriptures are from the ESV unless otherwise noted

Then he brought out Israel with silver and gold, and there was none among his tribes who stumbled.
Egypt was glad when they departed, for dread of them had fallen upon it.
He spread a cloud for a covering, and fire to give light by night.
They asked, and he brought quail, and gave them bread from heaven in abundance.
He opened the rock, and water gushed out; it flowed through the desert like a river.
For he remembered his holy promise, and Abraham, his servant.
So he brought his people out with joy, his chosen ones with singing.
And he gave them the lands of the nations, and they took possession of the fruit of the peoples’ toil,
that they might keep his statutes and observe his laws. Praise the LORD!

Psalm 105:37-45

“Egypt was glad when they departed.” Indeed, at least the people were. The Pharaoh, as we know, changed his mind. But I’m sure those people were truly glad to get those Israelites out of there. So glad that Israel was able to plunder Egypt on their way out.

Whoever closes his ear to the cry of the poor will himself call out and not be answered.
Proverbs 21:13

Father, you have been gracious and generous to us, blessing us beyond what we ever imagined. We certainly still have needs, but you have met all of our needs through your provision in our lives. Help us to remain faithful and to have faith in your future grace to meet any needs that will arise. And in that faith, help us also to be attentive to the “cry of the poor” around us. Show us how we can help and who we can help.
Even so, come, Lord Jesus!

The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.

Grace and peace, friends.

Locked On the Inside

Today is Thursday, June 7, 2018. Day 22,001.

Ten more days until Father’s Day!

“Let the rain kiss you. Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops. Let the rain sing you a lullaby.” ~ Langston Hughes, 1902-1967, BrainyQuote

The word for today is Disnefy, a verb. I bet you can guess what it means. “To create or alter in a simplified, sentimentalized, or contrived form or manner.” Those fairy tales got Disnefied.”

As far as my back is concerned, I had the best day, so far, yesterday. It still hurts, but not nearly as bad as it was. Walking is getting easier. However, standing still for any length of time is still a challenge. I am simply trying to take it slowly, hoping that, as they say, “This, too, shall pass.” I figure I will be able to play at church, this Sunday, but I may sit down for it.

The Red Sox beat the Tigers again, last night, 7-1, to improve their record to 43-19. Still one game ahead of the Yankees; still the best in MLB. They continue their series tonight.

The Rangers beat the A’s again, as well, 8-2, for their first sweep of the season. It was only a two-game series, but a sweep is a sweep. Their record is 27-37, and since Houston beat Seattle, they are back to 12.5 games out in the AL West.

TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL AND PRAYERS
All Scriptures are from the ESV unless otherwise noted

He sent Moses, his servant, and Aaron, whom he had chosen.
They performed his signs among them and miracles in the land of Ham.
He sent darkness, and made the land dark; they did not rebel against his words.
He turned their waters into blood and caused their fish to die.
Their land swarmed with frogs, even in the chambers of their kings.
He spoke, and there came swarms of flies, and gnats throughout their country.
He gave them hail for rain, and fiery lightning bolts through their land.
He struck down their vines and fig trees, and shattered the trees of their country.
He spoke, and the locusts came, young locusts without number,
which devoured all the vegetation in their land and ate up the fruit of their ground.
He struck down all the firstborn in their land, the firstfruits of all their strength.

Psalm 105:26-36

For the next phase of Israel’s history, this passage does a quick run-down of the plagues of Egypt.

It is an honor for a man to keep aloof from strife, but every fool will be quarreling.
Proverbs 20:3

(From The Business of Heaven, C.S. Lewis)
Hell

“The demand that God should forgive such a man while he remains what he is, is based on a confusion between condoning and forgiving. To condone an evil is simply to ignore it, to treat it as if it were good. But forgiveness needs to be accepted as well as offered if it is to be complete: and a man who admits no guilt can accept no forgiveness. . . .
“I willingly believe that the damned are, in one sense, successful, rebels to the end; that the doors of Hell are locked on the inside. I do not mean that the ghosts may not wish to come out of Hell, in the vague fashion wherein an envious man ‘wishes’ to be happy: but they certainly do not will even the first preliminary stages of that self-abandonment through which alone the soul can reach any good. They enjoy forever the horrible freedom they have demanded, and are therefore self-enslaved: just as the blessed, forever submitting to obedience, become through all eternity more and more free.
“In the long run the answer to all those who object to the doctrine of Hell, is itself a question: ‘What are you asking God to do?’ To wipe out their past sins and, at all costs, to give them a fresh start, smoothing every difficulty and offering every miraculous help? But He has done so, on Calvary. To forgive them? They will not be forgiven. To leave them alone? Alas, I’m afraid that is what He does.” (From Problem of Pain)

Yes, I believe in Hell. I know that is an unpopular belief, these days, even among a large number of Christians. Yet I believe in it, because I see Jesus teaching about it. I do not completely understand it, any more than I completely understand heaven. Nevertheless, I believe in it. And I think this snippet of C.S. Lewis is an excellent description of the people who will be there. Dallas Willard once said, and this is a paraphrase, that everyone who wants to be in heaven will be there.

Father, I am grateful that you have placed the desire for you and for heaven in my heart. I cannot express the gratitude sufficiently. I pray for others around me, that, somehow, I might show them that same desire, and somehow influence them in the same direction. Yet, I fail, so often. May my life today reflect the life of Jesus as I walk in your kingdom.
Even so, come, Lord Jesus!

The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.

Grace and peace, friends.

Slow To Anger

Today is Wednesday, June 6, 2018. Day 22,000! I am 22,000 days old today!

Eleven days until Father’s Day!

“In modern America, anyone who attempts to write satirically about the events of the day finds it difficult to concoct a situation so bizarre that it may not actually come to pass while the article is still on the presses.” ~ Calvin Trillin, The Quotations Page

The word for today is superluminal, an adjective which means, “appearing to travel faster than the speed of light.” Is that even possible??

I had the best night of sleep, last night, since I injured my back. It’s still not completely well, though, as walking to the kitchen and standing to wait for coffee to make was a little painful, still. But I believe it’s getting better every day. It would, no doubt, be very helpful if I stayed home from work and just sat all day. Sadly, that is not happening.

The Red Sox beat the Tigers 6-0, last night, improving their record to an MLB best 42-19. They also remain one game up on the Yankees in the AL East.

The Rangers came back from behind to beat Oakland 7-4. Their record is 26-37, and they are 13.5 out in the AL West, which is now topped by, of all teams, the Seattle Mariners!!

TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL AND PRAYERS
All Scriptures are from the ESV unless otherwise noted

When he summoned a famine on the land and broke all supply of bread,
he had sent a man ahead of them, Joseph, who was sold as a slave.
His feet were hurt with fetters; his neck was put in a collar of iron;
until what he had said came to pass, the word of the LORD tested him.
The king sent and released him; the ruler of the peoples set him free;
he made him lord of his house and ruler of all his possessions,
to bind his princes at his pleasure and to teach his elders wisdom.
Then Israel came to Egypt; Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham.
And the LORD made his people very fruitful and made them stronger than their foes.
He turned their hearts to hate his people, to deal craftily with his servants.

Psalm 105:16-25

It is at this point that we realize (some may have already) that this is a “mini-history” of Israel. In this passage, we see how God was working to prepare the land for what was to come. While Joseph went through some harrowing days, God was preparing him, Egypt, and Israel for what was to come.

Good sense makes one slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook an offense.
Proverbs 19:11

Father, I pray for good sense. I confess that I still find myself getting angry too quickly over trivial things. Give me good sense and make me slow to anger. Help me have the patience and wisdom to overlook offenses.
Even so, come, Lord Jesus!

The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.

Grace and peace, friends.

The Joy of the Lord

Today is Tuesday, June 5, 2018. Day 21,999. Tomorrow’s a significant day!!

12 days until Father’s Day.

“Prejudice is a great time saver. You can form opinions without having to get the facts.” ~ E.B. White (Stuart Little, Charlotte’s Web), 1899-1985, BrainyQuote

“Dance like it hurts,
Love like you need money,
Work when people are watching.”
Scott Adams (Dilbert), The Quotations Page

The word for today is schlimazel, a noun which means, “an inept, bungling person who suffers from unremitting bad luck.” Can you guess where is the only place I’ve ever heard that word?

The back/leg pain is close to the same, this morning, but perhaps slightly better. I seem to have slept better, last night, but still struggle to be able to sleep flat on my back or on my left side. Currently, as I sit in this chair, typing, there is no pain, though. I made it through work okay, yesterday, but every time I had to walk any great distance or stand for more than a couple of minutes, it began to hurt. It would probably be helpful to stay at home for a day, but I’m not going to do that. C is going to the Y tonight, but, barring a miracle (which I certainly believe in), I will not.

There were no baseball games yesterday. Okay, that’s not 100% true, just none that I care about. However, the Yankees split a double header with Detroit, so the Sox are officially in first place by one game, according to the standings.

TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL AND PRAYERS
All Scriptures are from the ESV unless otherwise noted

He is the LORD our God; his judgments are in all the earth.
He remembers his covenant forever, the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations,
the covenant that he made with Abraham, his sworn promise to Isaac,
which he confirmed to Jacob as a statute, to Israel as an everlasting covenant,
saying, “To you I will give the land of Canaan as your portion for an inheritance.”
When they were few in number, of little account, and sojourners in it,
wandering from nation to nation, from one kingdom to another people,
he allowed no one to oppress them; he rebuked kings on their account,
saying, “Touch not my anointed ones, do my prophets no harm!”

Psalm 105:7-15

Comforting words in this passage, “He remembers his covenant forever.” The Lord does not forget his promises, nor does he fail to keep them. Sometimes, I believe, we misrepresent his promises, especially when we attempt to appropriate ones that were specifically made to Israel. But that’s not a topic for today’s devotion.

Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready, for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”
Nehemiah 8:10
But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them ever sing for joy, and spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may exult in you.
For you bless the righteous, O LORD; you cover him with favor as with a shield.

Psalm 5:11-12
Go, eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a merry heart, for God has already approved what you do.
Ecclesiastes 9:7

The old Dairy Queen commercials used to paraphrase Ecclesiastes: “Eat, drink, and be merry!”

Dallas Willard defines “joy” as “a pervasive sense of well-being.” Joy has nothing to do with circumstances. In fact, joy is present in spite of circumstances, many times. When the joy of the Lord is our strength, nothing can phase us. Sure, we might not be “happy,” but we can be joyful without being happy. Did you know that?

Let us sing for joy, because we take refuge in the Lord. The joy of the Lord is our strength!

Thank you, Father, for joy. Thank you for constantly reminding me that I can your joy in my life, regardless of my circumstances. Give me that pervasive sense of well-being today. Nothing can harm me, even if my leg hurts when I walk. I can still be joyful. And in your joy, in your strength, this world is a perfectly safe place for me to be. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me, and I shall dwell in your house forever.
Even so, come, Lord Jesus!

Let your steadfast love, O LORD, be upon us, even as we hope in you. Psalm 33:22

Grace and peace, friends.

Seek His Presence Continually

Today is Monday, June 4, 2018. Day 21,998.

30 days until July 4.

It is the birthday of George III of the United Kingdom (1738-1820). He said, “A traitor is everyone who does not agree with me.” BrainyQuote

The word for today is atavism, a noun which means, “reversion to an earlier type; throwback.” A land-line telephone is kind of an atavism, these days.

My back/leg pain seems better, this morning. I slept moderately okay, last night, though my Fitbit said was awake/restless for almost an hour, total. I think I’m going to try to go to work and see if I can make it.

Red Sox beat the Astros 9-3, last night, so if my memory serves me, they split the series. This puts the Sox at 41-19, but still a half game behind the Yankees, who also beat the O’s again. Wait. I’m really confused. The official MLB standings list the Yankees in first place, but then says they are one game behind. The ESPN overview of the whole MLB lists the Sox in first, with the Yankees one game behind. The Yankees have a .685 percentage, while the Sox percentage is .683. This, to me, says “virtual tie.” I’m so confused. Either way, the two teams are, as they say, “neck and neck.”

The Rangers lost to the Angels, again, 3-1, and will play Oakland, in Texas, tonight. They are 25-37.

TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL AND PRAYERS
All Scriptures are from the ESV unless otherwise noted

Oh give thanks to the LORD; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples!
Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wondrous works!
Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice!
Seek the LORD and his strength; seek his presence continually!
Remember the wondrous works that he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he uttered,
O offspring of Abraham, his servant, children of Jacob, his chosen ones!

Psalm 105:1-6

“See the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually.” That is the best advice to get through life.

Father, as I try to make my way through this day, I pray for your presence to be known. May I seek your presence continually, through this day. That is my first prayer. The second is that my pain would dissipate and that I will be able to work.
Even so, come, Lord Jesus!

Let your steadfast love, O LORD, be upon us, even as we hope in you. Psalm 33:22

Grace and peace, friends.

He Who Made History Happen

Today is Tuesday, August 16, 2016. THREE more days until S turns 23!

Quote of the Day

“The past always looks better than it was. It’s only pleasant because it isn’t here.” – Finley Peter Dunne

Word of the Day

Eponym – A person whose name is or is thought to be the source of the name of something, such as a city or country. “George Washington is the eponym of Washington DC.”

Today is Rollercoaster Day. Since I can’t get out and ride one today, I’ll share a video of one.

I’m not very focused this morning. I really could have used another hour or two of sleep, but here we go.

Practice went well, last night. The work day was pretty uneventful, so that was good. And it’s the second day of a four-day work week for us. Since S’s birthday is Friday, we are taking PTO on that day, so we can spend it with her.

The temperatures have shifted drastically, and today’s high is only projected to be 85. That’s almost twenty degrees cooler than this time last week! Plus we’re getting some much needed rain, too.

Speaking of much needed, the Rangers picked up a win, yesterday, beating Oakland 5-2. This made them the first AL team to win 70 games, and kept them 5.5 games ahead of Seattle, who seems to be on fire, at the moment. The Red Sox got their current streak up to four games, beating the Indians 3-2. They remain in third place, but only one game out of first, which is a tie between Baltimore and Toronto.

TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL

(From Praying With the Psalms)

So he brought his people out with joy, his chosen ones with singing.
And he gave them the lands of the nations, and they took possession of the fruit of the peoples’ toil,
that they might keep his statutes and observe his laws. Praise the LORD!
Psalm 105:43-45

Historically, we see God acting: “protecting, leading, sustaining, promising, fulfilling.” Peterson counts 34 active verbs in this Psalm that have God as their subject. “Our interest in history is not so much in what happened as in who made it happen.”

“Dear Father, while others examine the past for evidence of human accomplishments, gathering material to rationalize pride, give me the ability to see it as a record of your covenant faithfulness, the gracious acts by which all men may experience your love and salvation. Amen.”

Father, you have been historically faithful, not only to me, but to your people throughout all generations. We have consistently failed you in many ways, but you keep us in your care, “protecting, leading, sustaining, promising, fulfilling.” Help me to see all of these things as I look through history, both of the world and my own life.

Come, Lord Jesus!

The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.

Grace and peace, friends.

What Does “Born Again” Mean?

Today is Monday, August 15, 2016. FOUR more days until S turns 23!

Quote of the Day

“We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” – George Bernard Shaw

Word of the Day

Whigmaleerie – 1. a whim; notion. 2. a whimsical or fanciful ornament or contrivance; gimmick.

Today is Relaxation Day. Somehow, I don’t think my boss is going to buy that.

Yesterday was a nice day. After a great worship gathering, I called in an order for S and me, at Lee’s Grilled Cheese. We swung by there and picked it up on the way home, after which C jumped in her car and headed to Denton to pick up R. I cranked up the PS4 and started exploring No Man’s Sky. I stopped after a couple of hours and picked up the trombone to practice for a bit. After figuring out James Pankow’s lick at the end of “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is,” and working on a couple of other hard spots in another piece, I put it up and went back to the game. I also took out trash and did dishes somewhere in there. So I didn’t waste the entire afternoon playing games.

C got home around 6:00 PM or so, maybe closer to 6:30, not sure. They had a great time together, which is one of the reasons I decided to stay home. It wasn’t totally selfish. I really thought R might be needing a little “Mom Time.”

We watched a TV show, then headed on to bed. I was tired from not getting enough sleep the night before.

Tonight, I have band practice, so it’s another late night.

TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL

(From Praying With the Psalms)

Then he brought out Israel with silver and gold, and there was none among his tribes who stumbled.
Egypt was glad when they departed, for dread of them had fallen upon it.
He spread a cloud for a covering, and fire to give light by night.
They asked, and he brought quail, and gave them bread from heaven in abundance.
He opened the rock, and water gushed out; it flowed through the desert like a river.
For he remembered his holy promise, and Abraham, his servant.
Psalm 105:37-42

In nature, the strong survive. But in the world of grace, the weak are preserved, as well as the strong. “Escape from Egypt is not a horror story of desperate scrambling, but a salvation story of gracious providence in which God gathers all his people to new life.”

“‘Lead kindly Light, amid th’ encircling gloom, lead Thou me on; the night is dark, and I am far from home; lead Thou me on: keep Thou my feet; I do not ask to see the distant scene–one step enough for me’ (John Henry Newman, ‘Lead, Kindly Light’). Amen.”

(From My Utmost For His Highest)

Signs of the New Birth

You must be born again. John 3:7

Nicodemus asked the question, “How can a man be born when he is old?” The answer is, “When he is old enough to die.” When we are old enough to die our “rights,” to the virtues that we think we possess, and to receive a life that was not there before. “The new life manifests itself in conscious repentance and unconscious holiness.”

Our knowledge of Christ cannot be simply that which we have heard from others. It must be “born of internal spiritual perception.” Big words, but not so difficult to understand. The Spirit must be present, teaching us about Christ, giving us something within that connects us with Jesus. “To be born again means that I see Jesus.”

We must be able to discern God’s rule in his Kingdom. It was always there, but now we can see it; now we can discern it. “Your Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven.”

Regarding sin, being “born again” means that we have the supernatural power to stop sinning. This is the toughest part. We should not sin. We do. Because we do not faithfully practice the disciplines of the spiritual life, we allow our bodies, our flesh to have too much control. The Bible doesn’t tell us that we can’t sin, because we most certainly can, but it does tell us that we don’t have to, any more.

Father, teach me these truths; teach me your ways. These are things that I have known and seen in Scripture for years and years. Yet I struggle with them to this day. I believe I have “seen” Jesus. I believe that the Spirit has taught me things about Christ, personally, not just things that I have heard from other people. I believe that I have discerned your rule in your Kingdom. However, I still sin. Will I ever stop? Only you know that. The standard answer is, not until I see your face, and I still believe that to be true. As long as I am in this flesh, I will continue to struggle against sin and temptation. But I pray for the disciplines to make me stronger, to put my life in a position where you can be more in control.

Come, Lord Jesus!

The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.

Grace and peace, friends.

Seek the Lord

Today is Sunday, August 14. FIVE more days until S turns 23 and we get a day off from work!

Quote of the Day

“The heart of another is a dark forest, always, no matter how close it has been to one’s own.” – Willa Cather

Word of the Day

Sacerdotal – of priests; priestly.

Today is Creamsicle Day. Now if I can just find an ice cream truck!!

The Night of Worship went well, I think. It seems like there weren’t as many people there, last night, but it was still a sweet time. There was a good amount of prayer that went on, as well as the music. I struggled with my back, though, as it started hurting me around three songs in. If I do this again, I think I will lower the keyboard stand and sit down.

I slept really well, but not for long enough. I’m still pretty tired from last night, but I have to “suck it up” and be on point for this morning’s worship gathering. I will have all afternoon to rest up. C and R are going on a road trip, this afternoon. R wants to play the soundtrack of “Hamilton” for C while they drive. I believe they’re going to drive up to Winstar, which is about an hour from where R lives. I decided to stay home so I can practice the trombone a little bit. And play my new PS4 game.

We are getting ready for our worship gathering this morning. We are The Exchange. We meet at 10:15 at the Northpark YMCA, 9100 N Beach St., Fort Worth, TX. If you are in the area, please come worship with us.

TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL

Psalm 105:26-36

The plagues of Egypt are great examples of the power of God. Most of the plagues consisted of something that, under normal circumstances, was relatively harmless. “Solely by the work of God it was transformed into a powerful instrument of his will.”

“Dear God, I know that you can use anything to bring about your purposes, even things that I treat as unimportant, even areas of life that seem to me to be remote from the divine mercy. Grant that I may be alert to your will in every thing and every place. Amen.”

(From Daily Guideposts 2016)

Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known. 1 Corinthians 13:12

In today’s reading, author Debbie Macomber writes of a time when her family had moved, and had begun to seek a new church. She made a list of everything she wanted. They visited church after church, failing to find the one that lived up to all of her expectations. One morning, she began praying over her list. She says that she felt God speak to her heart: “Debbie that list you have–that’s heaven. Ask Me to guide you to the church I have chosen for you.”

That changed everything. Within a month they had found the right church. “It wasn’t perfect. No church is.”

What I get from this may not be what the writer intended, but it’s what God intends. We spend too much time seeking the external things instead of God, himself. We need to seek God, not the programs that the church offers. We need to seek the Lord, not a great preacher or worship team. Seek Him.

Father, I believe I have understood this in the past. Yet I still find myself affected by external circumstances surround church and worship. Direct me, by the power of your Spirit, to seek YOU! All of the externals are really not all that important, in the grand scheme of things. I need to seek you, and you alone. Show me your ways, that I may know you and find favor with you. Let me see your glory.

Come, Lord Jesus!

The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.

Grace and peace, friends.

Stop and Get Right

Today is Saturday, August 13, 2016. Six more days until S turns 23! (And I get a day off from work!)

Quote of the Day

“Some cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go.” – Oscar Wilde

Word of the Day

Me-tooism – the adopting of policies, methods, products, etc., similar or identical to those of a peer, rival, or competitor.

Today is Garage Sale Day Isn’t that every Saturday?

I had a great time practicing last night, for tonight’s night of worship. It’s going to be an awesome time, tonight, I truly believe it. It’s a busy weekend, with practice last night, the Night of Worship tonight, and then “normal” church (although our church is anything but normal) tomorrow morning.

After I got home and had something to eat, I spent a few hours playing a new PS4 game that I got, called No Man’s Sky. It’s pretty amazing.

Today, there needs to be a trip to the grocery store, and I need to be at the house for the Night of Worship by 4:00 PM. It starts at 6:00 PM. Ish.

TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL

(From Praying With the Psalms)

Then Israel came to Egypt; Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham.
And the LORD made his people very fruitful and made them stronger than their foes.
He turned their hearts to hate his people, to deal craftily with his servants.
Psalm 105:23-25

The ancient Egyptians saw Israel as slaves, and treated them as such. But Israel endured and believed themselves to be servants of God, and they “experienced deliverance.” Later, the Roman Empire saw Christians as criminals and persecuted them. “The Christians confessed themselves as sinners and found freedom in Christ.” In the life of faith, there is a reversal of strength and weakness.

“O God, when I feel incapable of good and worthless for love, I will remember your words to St. Paul; ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness,’ and I will take heart, even in Jesus Christ in whose name I pray (2 Corinthians 12:9). Amen.”

(From My Utmost For His Highest)

Quench Not the Spirit

Do not quench the Spirit. 1 Thessalonians 5:19

The Spirit’s voice is sometimes very gentle, like a soft breeze, and if we are not in communion with God, we will not hear it. We must be sensitive enough to hear when the Spirit checks us, so that we do not quench him. “His checks always come as a still small voice, so small that no one but the saint notices them.”

It is important that we remain in the light, so that we don’t become sentimental Christians and continuously look back at past experience. We can’t live on our spiritual memories, especially if that is our defense mechanism for refusing to walk in the light, currently. If we sense the Spirit checking, we must immediately stop and get right.

Father, I pray that I will always have the sensitivity to hear the Spirit and do what he is telling me. May I take on the easy yoke of Christ and do the disciplines, so that I can fully walk in the light, and experience you, here and now. I don’t want to be the kind of Christian that winds up always looking back at “back in the day.” I want that time to be now; let my past experiences merge with my present spiritual intimacy with you, that there would not be any noticeable break between the two. In short, may my abiding in you be consistent and deep.

I pray for the the Night of Worship tonight. May your Spirit fill that place and bring healing, truth, love, peace, and grace, and whatever else anyone who is there might need.

Come, Lord Jesus!

The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.

Grace and peace, friends.

What Does the Crisis Reveal?

Today is Friday! August 12, 2016. Only seven more days until S turns 23!

Quote of the Day

“Give me a room whose every nook is dedicated to a book.” ― Robert Southey

Word of the Day

Blandishment – something, as an action or speech, that tends to flatter, coax, entice, etc.: Our blandishments left him unmoved. We succumbed to the blandishments of tropical living.

Today is Vinyl Record Day. Vinyl records are the coolest. I was once excited to hear music on CDs, but, over time, I realized that it still sounds better on vinyl. It’s the whole “digital vs analog” thing. Digital sounds perfect, true. But life isn’t perfect, and life isn’t lived in analog. Records sound “warmer,” more alive.

Tonight, I’ll be going straight from work to a friend’s house, to practice for tomorrow night’s Night of Worship. I already packed my keyboard and stands in the car, so I’m ready to go. As long as my keyboard doesn’t melt while I’m at work. Anyway, this should be fun.

The Rangers and Red Sox both lost yesterday. The Rangers tried to pull one of their come-from-behind wins again, yesterday, but the bull pen let them down, giving up five runs in the top of the 8th inning. They had been behind 7-5, and score four in the bottom of the seventh, but just couldn’t hold on this time. The Rockies were having none of that. Then the Red Sox, ahead 2-1, gave up three runs in the top of the eighth, to lose the game and the series to the Yankees. Pretty soon, I’m not going to be able to console myself by saying, “There’s still a lot of baseball left.” They have played 115 games, give or take a few, so there are only 47 left. Roughly a quarter of the season left.

TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL

(From Praying With the Psalms)

When he summoned a famine on the land and broke all supply of bread,
he had sent a man ahead of them, Joseph, who was sold as a slave.

His feet were hurt with fetters; his neck was put in a collar of iron;
until what he had said came to pass, the word of the LORD tested him.
The king sent and released him; the ruler of the peoples set him free;
he made him lord of his house and ruler of all his possessions,
to bind his princes at his pleasure and to teach his elders wisdom.
Psalm 105:16-22

“The story of Joseph is continuously useful to the person of faith.” How true this is. I don’t have time to relate the story for those who aren’t familiar with it, but I will say that Joseph, from a certain point in his life, had every right to believe that God had abandoned him, but he kept his faith, believing with all his heart that the Lord was in control of all things. It paid off, as he was eventually placed in charge of Egypt, second only to the Pharaoh. So no matter how bad things get (or seemingly bad, because “bad” is only in the perspective of those of us who can’t see everything that God sees), we can have faith that God has the situation firmly in hand. He is not surprised by our troubles, and has always “prepared a way for our salvation.” In fact, he has already been at the finish line. “In difficult times the Christian is surprised, not by disaster, but by providence.”

“Dear Father, thank you for looking after me by sending Jesus ahead of me through temptation and suffering, so that with confidence I can walk through ‘the valley of the shadow’ and know that nothing will separate me from the love you have for me. In Jesus’ name (Psalm 23:4). Amen.”

(From My Utmost For His Highest)

The Theology of Rest

And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Matthew 8:26

When we experience fear, we pray to God. In fact, it is all we can do. And he has a right to expect us to “have an understanding confidence in Him. God expects His children to be so confident in Him that in any crisis they are the reliable ones.” But, most of the time, our trust only goes so far before we revert to panic prayer mode, praying no more effectively than those who do not know God. When we do this, we show how little faith we truly have.

How must the disciples have felt when Jesus said those words to him, “O you of little faith?” “And what a pang will go through us when we suddenly realize that we might have produced downright joy in the heart of Jesus by remaining absolutely confident in Him, no matter what was ahead.”

When the crisis comes, we reveal where our trust lies. “If we have been learning to worship God and to trust Him, the crisis will reveal that we will go to the breaking point and not break in our confidence in Him.”

Where does “rest” fit into all of this (see the title)? All of this should “work out into rest in God which means oneness with God, a oneness which will make us not only blameless in His sight, but a deep joy to Him.” At this point, I would say that the word “rest” and the word “abide” would be interchangeable here. If we are abiding in Jesus and his words, the crisis will prove that to be the case, and we will be steadfast, relying solely on the grace of God and his care for us.

Father, that is my word for this year, abide. And you are still teaching me to do it. I do believe that I am learning, but slowly. I still encounter moments, every week, it seems, wherein I fail to bring you joy, and show that I am relying, not on you and your grace, but on something else, sometimes I know not what. But the good thing is that, these days, I realize almost instantly that I have done so, and am able to repent immediately, and, in some cases, apologize where necessary. Steps in the right direction, Father, but don’t stop working; don’t stop chiseling and forming me. My heart’s desire is to be like Jesus, and I will keep forging ahead, by your Spirit. Give me the faith of Joseph!

Come, Lord Jesus!

The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.

Grace and peace, friends.
